Virtual Server 2005 R2 Networking Gremlins

The other day we applied some security updates to our production server and rebooted them. I went to check on a virtual server we have and low and behold it was missing.  I couldn't ping it, browse to it, or even call it on the phone.  It was, in fact, MIA.  So I hoped onto to our production network to investigate.

The host server was running fine so I RDP'd to it to open the Virtual Server Administration Website.  The virtual server was there, and running, but there were several odd error messages in the VS log.

Virtual Machine The virtual machine "*****" cannot connect virtual network adapter 1 because either the virtual network is invalid or access was denied. This virtual network adapter will be left disconnected

Remote Control The user "Unknown" at Internet address ***** failed to authenticate a new connection to the VMRC server.

After a bit of research, I determined that the Virtual Networks on the Virtual Server had disappeared!  When Virtual Server 2005 is installed it will automatically set up these virtual networks for you, based on the physical network adapters on the host.  But sure enough, they were gone.   I tried removing the current network cards for the virtual server, but there were no "host" adapters available to choose from to add them back.

The resolution was to re-create the virtual networks manually, specifying the appropriate network card for each.  After that, I added the network cards back to the virtual server and Behold!  The AWAL server returns!
