This Is Not An Invoice

It never fails to amaze me the type of mail solicitations that work.

The latest one I received was from a "Payment Processing Center" and included a check for $3.50. Before I ran down to cash this unexpected windfall, I took a closer look at the disclaimer on the back of the check. It informed me that if I deposit this check, I will hereto after be enrolled in their valuable search engine listing service at a cost of $79 per year. You may be wondering why I refer to these solicitations as ones that "work". Well, it's just like spam; if spam didn't work, most if not all spammers would have given up by now. The New Spam

Spammers are some of the most irritating and annoying people on earth. They, along with telemarketers, just have a way rubbing me the wrong way. They waste my time and yours by directing our attention to non-revenue producing tasks.

A recent telephone survey of 1,000 adults by the National Technology Readiness Survey produced by Rockbridge Associates Inc. and the University of Maryland's Center for Excellence in Service revealed that 75 percent of Internet users receive spam daily. The average number of spam messages received per day is 18.5 and the average time spent each day deleting them is 2.8 minutes. The study found that the loss in productivity equals $21.6 billion per year based on average U.S. wages. (Source) [More]

I’ve been tempted as you probably have. Although a new iPod Nano runs about $150, the idea of getting something for free appeals to everyone. If you are over the age of 30, you have most likely learned from life experiences that there is nothing for free. You will pay for it in time or frustration or both.

Web hosting as a business is a great entrepreneurial idea; lease or buy a web server, host websites and collect the monthly fee. That’s an over simplistic illustration of the business model, but you get the idea. Over the past couple of years, the number of “cheap web hosting” companies has grown tremendously. Today, you can even get basic web hosting for free. [More]
